Trend alert: Plant-based diets are going to be big in 2018

< 1 min

With a number of celebrities and nutritionists touting its benefits, as well as a newly released documentary discussing it, there’s no doubt that plant-based diets are going to be a big thing next year.  In fact, according to market research group 1010 Data, ‘plant-based’ as a search term tripled from 2016 to 2017. “Consumers are getting more conscious. They’re mindful of the products they put in and on their bodies, and of the environmental impact they have” says the report.

To keep up to date with their guests’ needs, restaurant owners need to adapt and add plant-based offerings to their menu. One of the restaurants who have embraced this new lifestyle is Ritual Cafe in Linden, Johannesburg. The restaurant offers plant-based meals alongside meatier offerings, so that there’s something for everyone. Some of the items include beetroot and chevin spring rolls; quinoa, soy & cashew cannelloni and coconut & lime panna cotta. Ritual Cafe’s menu items are also gaining traction amongst those don’t strictly follow a plant-based diet.

Ritual Cafe owner and chef, Sean Ackermann says: “There has definitely been a shift in what people expect when they eat out. Our patrons want healthier or more sustainable options without compromising on taste and flavour. We’ve seen a definite increase in how many diners are ordering vegetarian and vegan dishes from our menu, if even just to try them out.”

“While most South African restaurants offer one or two plant-based dishes, Ritual Cafe prides itself on a pretty even split of veggie- and meat-based dishes,” adds Ackermann.

We’re looking forward to more South African restaurants joining the call to add plant-based dishes on the menu – it’s great for the customer, the environment, and an excellent way to show off your culinary skills!
