Jonsson Workwear is weaving new life into worn clothing with its Jonsson Rethread initiative

Jonsson Workwear, a leading supplier of high-quality workwear, has launched Jonsson Rethread, a bold sustainability programme that underpins its promise of lasting quality to tackle textile waste.

South Africa is facing a growing textile waste crisis. With less than 13% of textiles being recycled, most discarded clothing ends up in landfills, adding to an environmental challenge that can no longer be ignored. To combat this, Jonsson Workwear recently launched its Jonsson Rethread initiative, a practical solution designed to keep garments in use for longer.

Nick Jonsson, CEO of Jonsson Workwear, elaborates: “Our mission has always been to create lasting, fit-for-purpose workwear that allows workers to perform at their peak. With Jonsson Rethread, we’re taking that commitment a step further by ensuring our customers’ trusted Jonsson Workwear garments keep serving them for as long as possible, exactly as we intended.”

The company has a long-standing reputation for making reliable workwear and clothing designed to withstand the toughest conditions. It is determined to channel this heritage into a sustainability journey that goes beyond the workplace and challenges the idea that clothing is disposable.

As fast fashion floods the market, we’re asking South Africans to think differently,” continues Jonsson. “Our approach is rooted in responsibility – by supporting hard-working people with clothing that lasts and reducing the environmental impact of discarded garments. Every repair means fewer replacements, less waste and more value for the people who depend on these items every day.

The Jonsson Rethread initiative offers two practical solutions: repairing or repurposing, both giving worn pieces a second life and both available at Jonsson Workwear stores nationwide.

Minor garment repairs can be requested in-store at no charge. Items beyond repair are repurposed into pencil bags and donated to children in rural schools across South Africa through Rally to Read, a Jonsson Foundation partner focused on childhood literacy that has reached over 700,000 learners in under-resourced schools since 1998.

By linking sustainability with education, Jonsson Workwear aims to create meaningful community impact while encouraging responsible consumption. Through Jonsson Rethread, the company hopes to inspire a wider conversation about what South Africans value in the clothing they buy and wear.

Jonsson Rethread is available at Jonsson Workwear stores nationwide. For more information, visit www.jonssonworkwear.com
