Durbanville’s Taste of Terroir Red Wine Soirée to Unveil Region-First Pinotage

2 min read

The Durbanville Wine Valley’s annual Taste of Terroir red wine showcase returns on 8 August 2025, with this year’s edition set to debut the region’s first-ever limited-release collaborative Pinotage.

Held at Loch Lynne Wine Estate, the event features red wines from across the Durbanville region, poured by the winemakers themselves. Producers represented this year include Nitida, Meerendal, Maastricht, Mellish Family Vineyards, Klein Roosboom, Groot Phesantekraal, Durbanville Hills, D’Aria, De Grendel, and Diemersdal.

While Durbanville is often associated with Sauvignon blanc, recent accolades underscore the region’s strength in reds. Groot Phesantekraal Syrah 2023 received the International Judges’ Trophy, Diemersdal’s Private Collection 2018 earned 95 points at the Trophy Wine Show, and De Grendel Op die Berg Syrah and Groot Phesantekraal Syrah scored 95 and 94 points respectively in the 2025 Winemag Shiraz Report.

Durbanville reds were also awarded gold at the Decanter Wine Show, including De Grendel Rubaiyat, Durbanville Hills Collectors Reserve Pinotage, and The Tangram (White).

This year’s event will mark the first public tasting of a limited-release Pinotage, produced as a collaborative effort by members of the Durbanville Wine Valley. The wine honours three milestones: 200 years since the founding of Durbanville, 100 years of the Pinotage cultivar, and a century of Afrikaans as an official language.

Durbanville Wine Valley manager Natasha de Villiers said the wine represents more than just a technical collaboration.

“More than a meeting of diverse know-how, we’re excited to present this Pinotage as a collaboration between knowledge amassed over generations; ancient geophysics and cultural diversity,” said de Villiers. “This year’s Taste of Terroir is guaranteed to be one for the record books.”

The evening tasting includes live music by Emile Swiegers, three seasonal canapés by Kos Kouture, and tastings of red wines from all participating producers.
