Opihr World Adventure Cocktail Competition is open for entries

2 min read

For the first time in its five year history, the Opihr World Adventure Cocktail Competition is open to mixologists and bartenders in South Africa.

Opihr (pronounced O-Peer) Oriental Spiced Gin is inspired by the merchants who traversed the Spice Route, and the London Dry Gin is infused with exotic hand-picked botanicals that were historically gathered and traded along this ancient route. These botanicals include Spanish orange peel from Seville, Moroccan coriander seed from port towns, Italian juniper from Venice, Grapefruit peel from Istanbul, Indian tellicherry black peppers from the South Eastern Shores of Kerala and cubeb peppers from the historic Malaysian city of Malacca.

All botanicals are hand-sourced in the countries of origin before being transported to England where they’re used in the distilling process.

Opihr is inviting the world’s bartenders to enter their competition by submitting a bold cocktail recipe that uses a key local ingredient. To enter, bartenders must upload a picture of their cocktail to Instagram accompanied by the story behind it, tag @Opihrgin, use the hashtag #OpihrWorld and geotag the city they are in.

The bartenders behind the most inspiring recipes will be invited to the South African final to share the cocktail and its story with local judges Mmiso Luphondo and Justice Mukheli as well as last year’s global winner Aaron Pollack from Chicago who will announce the winning bartender to go through to the grand final.

Taking place from 24th – 27th September in Istanbul, the global final will see the last 10 standing bartenders competing for the ultimate title, The Spirit of Opihr.

A panel of judges including Simone Caporale (lead The Artisan bar, London, for five years – four of which they received the title of World’s Best Bar), Ondrej Pospichal (Spirit Evangelist currently based in Hong Kong from Proof and Company), and Aaron Pollock (2017 competition winner from Chicago, and previously of the Dawson) will be responsible for selecting the winner.
