SA’s Hospitality Boom Has an Energy Problem

The Infrastructure Challenge Behind Every Hotel Shower

As South Africa prepares for the December–January festive tourism rush, Kwikot highlights why energy-efficient hot water infrastructure is becoming critical to hospitality profitability and guest satisfaction.

As South Africa’s hospitality industry gears up for one of its busiest trading periods, hotels, lodges, resorts and guesthouses are preparing to welcome an influx of holidaymakers. While increased occupancy brings a welcome boost in revenue, it also places greater pressure on the infrastructure keeping these establishments running, particularly energy-intensive hot water systems.

South Africa welcomed a record 10.5 million international visitors in 2025, underscoring the sector’s growth potential. Yet behind the excitement of another busy holiday season lies a less visible challenge: delivering a consistent guest experience without allowing rising energy expenses to erode profitability.

From morning showers and laundry cycles to busy kitchens and spa facilities, hot water is essential to hospitality operations. With Eskom’s average electricity tariffs increasing by 8.76% for directly supplied customers in April 2026, and municipal bulk tariffs increasing by an average of 9.01% in July, operating these systems efficiently is becoming increasingly important.

The hidden infrastructure challenge

While hospitality establishments prepare for peak season by increasing staffing, refreshing facilities and managing bookings, the infrastructure operating behind the scenes deserves equal attention.

Hotels experience concentrated periods of high hot water consumption. During the festive season, when rooms are fully booked, these demand peaks become even more pronounced. Traditional electric water-heating systems can be costly to operate at this scale, making efficiency critical to both profitability and consistent service delivery.

“South Africa’s hospitality sector has enormous growth potential, and the festive season is an important opportunity for businesses to capitalise on increased tourism. But as occupancy levels rise, so does the pressure on the infrastructure supporting the guest experience,” says Murray Crow, Managing Director of Kwikot.

“Hot water is one of those essentials guests rarely think about, yet it plays a critical role in everything from showers to housekeeping. With our five new commercial heat pumps, we’re helping hospitality operators rethink an overlooked operating cost. Sustainable hospitality isn’t just about attracting visitors. It’s about ensuring businesses can grow, remain competitive and deliver exceptional service without their energy costs growing at the same pace.”

Rethinking the economics of hot water

As businesses look to manage rising costs, commercial heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to conventional electric water heating. By extracting heat from the surrounding air rather than generating it solely through electrical resistance, these systems can significantly reduce electricity consumption.

Kwikot has introduced five new models to its Kwikpump commercial range: the HP-008 7 kW, HP-013 13 kW inverter, HP-024, HP-040 and HP-085, providing options for varying hot water requirements, from boutique hotels to larger resorts.

The HP-040 uses full DC inverter technology and offers a coefficient of performance (COP) of up to 4.65 under specified conditions, while the HP-085 provides 85 kW of heating capacity and can produce up to 1,827 litres of hot water per hour under stated test conditions.

While savings depend on individual property requirements and operating conditions, more efficient water heating can lower electricity costs over time while supporting sustainability objectives.

Preparing for the peak, investing for the future

As the festive season approaches, hospitality businesses have an opportunity to assess whether their infrastructure can meet growing demand efficiently and reliably.

As South Africa builds on its tourism momentum, investment must extend beyond guest-facing amenities to the essential systems supporting them.
