Sun International has recognised Virath Gobrie, General Manager of Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom in Durban, as its Top General Manager for 2024.
Gobrie rejoined Sibaya in 2022 to lead a turnaround of the 20-year-old property, which now includes two hotels, multiple restaurants, conferencing facilities, and newly installed solar infrastructure. Under his leadership, Sibaya has increased its casino market share, upgraded its facilities, and repositioned itself in the conferencing market.
A major milestone was the launch of a R54-million solar project, which has improved energy sustainability and security infrastructure on-site. The property also forms part of a larger R23-billion development planned for the Sibaya Precinct.
Gobrie began his career at Sibaya as an accountant when it first opened in 2005. He later held senior financial and hospitality roles across the Sun International group, including Commercial Manager for Hospitality, before returning to KZN.
His current role includes overseeing all operational departments, ensuring compliance with gaming regulations, managing budgets and financial performance, and driving customer engagement. He also leads crisis management and long-term strategic planning.
Key refurbishment projects include upgrades to private gaming areas and ongoing property improvements. Gobrie emphasises team accountability and skills development as part of his leadership approach, managing a workforce of 1,350 employees.
“When I returned in 2022, the property needed direction and energy. My focus has been on restoring customer trust, investing in our people, and positioning Sibaya as Durban’s leading entertainment destination,” said Gobrie.
Community development has also expanded under his leadership. Notably, Sibaya invested R10 million in gender-based violence response centres, including the construction of 28 park homes across KwaZulu-Natal for victim support services.
Sibaya recently received the Sun International Group Award for Sustainability, recognising increased efforts in environmental management and energy efficiency.
The Sun International Group Sun Star employee recognition programme was first introduced in 2022 to annually honour employees who consistently go above and beyond expectations.
