The Newlands hotel has appointed the former General Manager of The Westin Cairo Golf Resort & Spa, bringing more than three decades of hospitality experience home to Cape Town.

The Vineyard has announced the appointment of Shaun Tregoning as General Manager, with effect from 28 September 2026.

Shaun brings more than three decades of hospitality experience across South Africa and internationally. Most recently General Manager of The Westin Cairo Golf Resort & Spa, his career has included senior leadership roles at The Westin Cape Town, The Table Bay and The Palace of the Lost City, as well as hotel assignments elsewhere in Africa.

The move brings Shaun back to Cape Town after working internationally. “What attracted me to The Vineyard is its genuine sense of place and history. It is one of those hotels where the property itself is part of the guest experience. After working internationally, the opportunity to bring my experience home to Cape Town, and to do so at a hotel as special and established as The Vineyard, is incredibly meaningful to me.”

The Vineyard’s gardens, hospitality, food and wine are also part of what Shaun believes makes the hotel so different from conventional luxury hotels. His focus will be on creating stays that feel personal and memorable, developing the people around him and creating an environment where the team feels valued and enjoys coming to work, while continuing to showcase Cape Town and South Africa to guests from around the world.

George Petousis, CEO of The Vineyard, says Shaun’s breadth of experience and understanding of hospitality made him a strong fit for the hotel. “The Vineyard is constantly evolving, and we wanted someone who understands what makes the hotel distinctive while also bringing a wealth of experience and fresh thinking to the role. Shaun understands the many different elements that shape a guest’s experience of a hotel, from its people and service to its food, spaces and surroundings. We are very pleased to welcome him to The Vineyard.”

For Shaun, taking on the role is also an opportunity to reconnect with Cape Town’s hospitality community and to get to know the team and the hotel. “I want to protect what guests love about The Vineyard while finding opportunities to innovate, and to continue building its reputation for genuine South African hospitality.”

About The Vineyard.
