Hemelhuijs restaurant in Cape Town, owned by Jacques Erasmus, is well-known for its sophisticated exploration of traditional Cape farm cuisine. A slice of the restaurant’s offering will now be available in Joburg at So Yum as the two restaurants collaborate.
Hemelhuijs x So Yum was prompted by So Yum’s recent move to a new, larger and more central position upstairs at Hyde Park Corner, as Jacques and Ernst Fischer, owner of So Yum and various other Asian restaurants had long joked about collaborating. So Yum will be offering a small Asian-inspired breakfast menu, which includes soft Japanese rice porridge and a selection of Asian omelettes, but the central breakfast offering will be from Hemelhuijs.
Signature breakfast dishes include traditional soft “mieliepap” served with local honey and salted butter, toasted “mosbolletjie” loaf with cultured cream and hand-made jam or marmalade, grilled farm sausage in tomato and onion “smoor” with soft poached egg. Soft poached eggs are also served with homemade potato rösti with herbed crème fraiche and with roasted artichoke and hollandaise.
Hemelhuijs’ salads make an appearance on the lunch menu, featuring papino, orange, shaved fennel, fragrant leaves and honey lime dressng, or raw shaved vegetables and pear, beetroot and Japanese dressing. Hemelhuijs’ fresh juices and a selection of their cocktails will also be available on the menu.
“I very excited to be introducing our first culinary foray in Johannesburg,” says Jacques, “and I’m delighted that we can collaborate with our old friends at So Yum to introduce our unique flavour to a new context.”
