Uber has unveiled its latest initiative, #GiveGogoMzansi, with a screening event at Egrek Cinema in Parkhurst on Thursday, 17 October. This inspiring campaign celebrates the beauty of South Africa’s hidden gems and, at the heart of the campaign, honours the beloved Gogos (grandmothers) who have played a pivotal role in shaping their communities.
The event, hosted by another of South Africa’s gems – award-winning poet Bothale Boikanyo – showcased the stunning South African landscapes by featuring breathtaking adventures with some of South Africa’s most beloved personalities alongside their Gogos. Uber took viewers on a journey through some of the country’s lesser-known treasures with the aim of reaffirming the importance of local tourism and community.
“Uber’s mission goes beyond simply offering rides – it’s about connecting people to opportunities and experiences. We want every individual South African, every community, and every visitor to experience the true wonders of this country, just as we’ve done with our Gogos,” says Cassie Jaganyi, Head of Communications at Uber. “By making it easier for people to connect with these incredible places, we’re not just creating memorable journeys, we’re deepening connections to the heart of Mzansi – empowering everyone to discover and enjoy the richness and diversity that this country has to offer.”
The campaign’s standout experiences included:
- A hot air balloon ride over scenic vistas with social media stars Lasizwe, Lungile, and Gogo, providing a fresh look at Mzansi’s natural beauty from above.
- A helicopter ride over the Magalies mountains with Grace Mondlana and Gogo, offering unforgettable panoramic views of one of South Africa’s hidden natural wonders.
- A Big 5 safari drive with content creator Vicky Jonas and Gogo, where participants witnessed South Africa’s majestic wildlife up close in one of the country’s renowned game reserves.
The premiere event was a celebration of adventure, heritage, and connection, leaving attendees inspired to explore Mzansi’s hidden gems with a renewed sense of pride. By sharing these heartwarming adventures, Uber was able to showcase the wonders of South Africa’s natural environment and celebrate the wisdom, strength, and love of the Gogos who joined in on the experiences.
Today, the Uber app creates over R1 Billion in additional value for the South Africa tourism industry each year, supporting millions of tourist journeys. #GiveGogoMzansi further highlights Uber’s commitment to promoting local tourism by providing safe and reliable access to South Africa’s remarkable destinations. As a key player in making South Africa more connected, Uber continues to foster discovery and exploration for locals and international visitors alike.
