The busy chef flew up from Cape Town to demonstrate his signature dishes in front of an audience at The Skillery “I was really looking forward to coming up here – I always like coming to Hostex,” says Reuben. “I love working with the young student chefs [at the Skillery].” The acclaimed chef was blown away by the engagement with the crowd. “It was a very good turnout – not just the amount of people, but they were very responsive and engaging, which makes it easier. You know, it’s always nice to show one dish or recipe, but you learn more and they learn more if there’s more interaction. I really enjoyed it!”[/vc_column_text][mk_gallery images=”23070,23071,23072,23073,23074,23075,23076,23077,23078,23079,23080,23081″ height=”300″ frame_style=”gray_border”][vc_column_text]“Even though [demonstrations] have to be educational… cooking is about having fun as well. Yeah, there’s a lot of professional people here too, but equally we want to have fun doing what we’re doing,” says Reuben.

The chef also had a chance to walk around the show, check out some products and engage with the exhibitors. “There’s quite a lot going on here!” says Reuben. “I was very impressed by some of the smaller companies that are here… From my neck of the woods there’s these guys from Darling that have cool little toffee sweets [Darling Sweets].” It wasn’t just the sweets, though, “but the packaging and everything – there’s something in the water in Darling that makes these guys come up with great ideas!”

“From a professional point of view, [there were] a lot of newer ingredients that I saw that aren’t even available yet, but coming into the market soon. I was up at the Global Pizza Challenge stand and the guys had this really cool curry paste that I’ve never seen before,” says Reuben. “And obviously, I’m a gadget man so there’s a lot of that happening around – I saw a very cool braai BBQ type set up at Tramontina with Steve Maresch from Local Grill, and they were making Picanha steaks – and you’re not going to just walk past where people are roasting beautiful steaks, so I stopped to try some!”

“There’s so much to see… but it’s quality,” says Reuben. “It’ll take you a while to get through, because you want to stop at every stand.”[/vc_column_text][mk_gallery images=”23089,23090,23091,23092,23095,23096,23097,23098,23099,23100,23101,23058″ height=”300″ frame_style=”gray_border”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
