[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There’s a lot to love about Winter in Cape Town, but the winter specials from award winning restaurants is probably top of our list. We were recently invited to try out the winter special from the Greenhouse Restaurant at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel, and it was sensational.

The special runs during lunch on Friday and Saturday, from 12h00 to 14h00 and will be running until December due to its popularity. There’s also a winter special available for dinner service from Tuesday to Thursday, until the end of August this year.

The four-course set menu costs R395 per person without wine, and R650 if you add wine pairings, which we would recommend as their selection is exquisite. Some of the wines that we enjoyed included Spioenkop Chenin Blanc, L’Ormarins MCC, Vuurberg White and Mulderbosch Noble Late Harvest.

The menu changes regularly, but during our visit we had:

  • Snacks, which included crispy dune spinach with smoked snoek infused soy sauce, beef shin croquettes, and cornbread with popcorn butter and popcorn dust
  • Atlantic tuna, Home-fermented kimchi, Beetroot kombucha radish, Compression of apple, Nitro Sesame
  • Hops-smoked sustainable fish, West coast mussles, Seaweed Daaltjie, Braised kelp, Yuzu gel OR Laingsburg Lamb, Pumpkin mousse, Paper-thin mushroom, Seed pesto, Soured Fynbos honey
  • Madagascan chocolate, Crispy caramel crumble, Bitter caramel pears, Honeybush tea cremeaux, Amazi chocolate milk

Sometimes, flavour is secondary to a pretty plate, but not so here. The meal was as delicious as it was beautiful. Each element on the plate brought interest, showcased a different technique and packed flavour, making every dish a joy to eat. The service was confident, professional and engaging, and the setting chic and light-filled, with windows overlooking the lush Constantia gardens. It’s everything you would expect from a restaurant headed up by Chefs Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss, and currently ranked 7th in the country.

The specials run alongside the Greenhouse Experience tasting menus which are R1100 without wine and R1650 with wine pairing.
