While many might joke about Joburgers’ love for faux-Tuscan architecture, the Gables venue completely bucks that trend. It’s a little piece of the Cape Winelands, tucked in the suburbs of Hyde Park/Sandton. Just one look at the façade and you’ll see where it got its name – Cape Dutch-style gables arch over the front door, setting the scene for what’s to come.

The family home was purchased in 1987 by the Gordon family and, little by little and piece by piece, the property was rebuilt using original fittings and commissioned items to make the house as authentically Cape Dutch as possible. The rooms have terracotta-tiled floors, with high thatched ceilings and wooden inlays on large picture windows overlooking the beautiful sweep of garden. Fireplaces are bordered by antique tiles, and handmade brass finishes throughout the house complete the look. The Gables is serene and warm, with an attention-to-detail that makes each room a pleasure to be in.

The current owner, Jessica Gordon, grew up in the house and it was her father whose passion for the Cape Dutch aesthetic led him to overhaul the property into what it is today. In September 2016, The Gables had its second incarnation as an art gallery, home décor store and country-style café, and in May the space was launched as a venue that’s ideal for small private events and corporate functions.

Facilities for business needs include The Gables Boardroom, which can accommodate up to 10 executives with all the conference facilities they could need as well as use of the Business Lounge for breakaways and freshly-brewed coffee. There are also two business breakaway rooms in the main house, and the barn can accommodate an event between 35 – 40 people.

The Gables can cater for bookings of up to 40 people, with catering available. However, if you’re looking for a great venue for a baby shower or kitchen tea, the Hand Brew Café is available for bookings of 6 or more.
