Get yourself down to Soweto on the 3rd of September for what promises to be a cracking event! Slow Food Johannesburg will be taking over the Soweto Theatre for the day, with three different events taking place:
Conference
This conference/networking event is coordinated by Izindaba Zokudla (a multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to create opportunities for urban agriculture within a sustainable food system). Topics include ‘Growing and Producing Food in Soweto and Johannesburg: Urban Farmers Speak’ and ‘Buying Food in the City; how to get a healthy and fair deal’. Panellists include dietician and functional medicine specialist Mpho Tshukudu, UJ anthropologist Hilda Bbhenkele, industrial designer Angus Campbell and Wandile Zwane, Head Department of Social Development, City of Johannesburg. Sessions are open to all those who purchase a R20 ticket at the market gate.
Food Market
The urban farmers from Soweto and Orange Farm, as well as a range of street vendors from Soweto, will be selling their produce at the Food Market.
Eat In Event
You’ll need to pre-book for this event, and it looks like it’ll be an absolute feast. An Nguni cow has been purchased and a range of teams from chef schools in
Soweto and Johannesburg, as well as a team of old ladies from Soweto, will be competing in a Nose to Tail contest. Each team will get two portions of the Nguni cow, some offal and some muscle cuts, and will be challenged to make something delicious. Visitors who’ve purchased a R295 ticket will be able to taste the dishes and vote on the winner. To book tickets, visit www.webtickets.co.za or www.sowetotheatre.com.
